In Carmen Bizet created the most enduringly popular example of the Opera Comique Genre.
With a score rich in operatic `hits` the audience look on with horror and fascination at the seduction and subsequent destruction of an ordinary army corporal. In the title role we find a character who embodies the life force, a character who takes life by the throat and extracts every ounce of energy from it. In showing us Carmen`s determination not to be suffocated by an over attentive lover, not to give in to authority and not to fear her own destiny, Bizet has created a character who inspires awe, respect and then envy.
`Carmen` is full of flesh and blood, believable people living out their own domestic tragedy, a tragedy of passion, jealousy, cruelty, love. Carmen touches a nerve, the emotions are true.
